If scrolling through Jaz and Todd’s Dallas tiki bar wedding photos doesn’t immediately have you craving a Mai Tai, then friend, we need to talk. 😉
I first met this sweet couple through the wonderful world of DFW tiki. We’re tikiphiles – enthusiasts of all things tiki. But it’s more than just a love for rum and craft cocktails; it’s a community rooted in music, art, ceramics, carvings, vintage fashion, and the mid-century aesthetic. It’s the thrill of the hunt, the joy of discovery. It’s a lifestyle.
“If you can’t get to paradise, I’ll bring it to you.” – Don The Beachcomber
The whole concept of a tiki bar is built on escapism. When done right, you step through the doors and are instantly transported to another world – one where worries melt away for an hour or two (or sometimes five).
Here in Dallas-Fort Worth, our tiki group gathers once a month on a Sunday afternoon, rotating between local tiki bars. We dress up, enjoy great company, and sip on that mini vacation in a glass. I got to know Jaz and Todd that way, so when they shared their engagement and plans for a tiki wedding, I was beyond excited.
I love non-traditional weddings, and I love tiki – so this was a match made in heaven! I’ve photographed plenty of bar weddings, but somehow, this was my first tiki bar wedding. Getting to capture it for friends was even more special – like a pretty garnish on an already fantastic cocktail. 🤌
This was also Swizzle Tiki Bar’s first wedding and Jen and Marty did an incredible job hosting and bringing everything together.
Jaz and Todd tied the knot on a VERY cold February day. But inside Swizzle, the lush Polynesian décor, rum-filled drinks, and close friends and family created a warm paradise. Escapism at its finest, amiright? Their wedding was an intimate, no-nonsense celebration – just good people, good drinks, and good times.
Just when you thought this wedding couldn’t get more unique – Todd’s dad, an ordained Dudeist Priest (yes, that’s a real thing!) officiated the ceremony. Fully embracing The Big Lebowski spirit, he donned a robe, sunglasses, and a laid-back vibe, making for a ceremony that was equal parts heartfelt and hilarious.
After the ceremony, guests stepped out onto the patio, braving the crisp air for a round of signature cocktails and merriment. Meanwhile, inside, the bar was seamlessly transformed from ceremony seating back into the dimly lit hideaway we all know and love. Before long, everyone made their way back in where a Hawaiian feast awaited – perfectly paired with another round of tiki drinks.
One of my favorite moments from the evening? The bridesmaids’ toast, which brilliantly wove classic tiki cocktail names into stories about Jaz and Todd’s relationship. They nailed it!
I honestly wish there were more tiki bar weddings because I would love to photograph them all – even with the tricky lighting and tight spaces. Jaz and Todd’s Dallas tiki bar wedding at Swizzle was a memorable mix of fun and love. If you’re planning a non-traditional wedding, whether at a tiki bar or another unique venue, I’d love to be a part of it!
